Pract 7

TalkingCock.com is a Singapore based website that is dedicated to humour. Firstly, the aims of the website is clearly stated. It aims to be Singapore's humour site. The site is filled with rib-cracking jokes from political to sports.

The site is up-to-date and relevant. I find numerous jokes and issues regarding our government and their actions. Some of these jokes were as recent as a week old.

The site is also easily accessed and no membership or registration is required. In other words, it is completely free. This is good as it encourages more people to visit this site and have a good laugh hassle free.

I also find the layout of the contents of the site easy to understand. Even though the site is crammed with jokes, news, pics etc. it is easy to navigate through the pages as there are buttons that help us guide our way. It is also broken up into different columns where users can easily click and read.

Pract 6

This week, we were suppose to evaluate the effectivenes of searching through the invisible web as compared to using other search facilities. The site that I would be using is Complete Planet.

This is the main site of Complete Planet:

As you can see, the site has numerous topics that range from Environment to Law. We can search for what we are looking for by clicking on the topic that is closest to what we are finding. My search topic is impact of cyber-bullying on youth. The topic that is closest to my search is Computing and Internet. However, instead of returning a list of result, I got an error. It shows that the site is not updated frequently or it was down for that particular day.

Even so, I feel that invisible web is best used for finding articles such as jobs vacancies or travel promotions. This are information that we are unable to find on normal search engines. However, I feel that it is not useful when we are searching for a particular topic as the list of result is small and might not necessarily be what you are searching for.

Pract 4 And 5

This week, I explored the different search facilities with my search topics. Some of the search facilities includes Google, Dogpile as well as Yahoo Subject Directory.

Google

Basically, when I entered my search topic, which is impact of cyber-bullying on youths, it manage to return a huge amount of sites. Even so, not all of these were related to my search topic. However, a good thing is that sites that nearly match my phrase are ranked at the top of list, making searches easier and faster.

Dogpile

Unlike Google, Dogpile, which is meta-search engine, does not have its own database. Searches are obtained from numerous search engines such as Yahoo, Google and Ask. A plus point when using this site is that we are like searching from multiple search engines but all at once. Not only that, the list of results is much lesser as compared to Search engines. In other words, our list of results is narrowed down to only a few.

Yahoo Subject Directory

Unlike Google or Dogpile, Yahoo subject directory is human compiled. In other words, the result list is much lesser as compared to Goo or Dogpile. However, yahoo subject directories contains theses and article that are not able to be found on Google or Dogpile. Even so, none og these were relevant to my search topic
